Vietnamese, the national language, is spoken by nearly the entire population.
Significant variations in pronunciation, some vocabulary, and even the tones
themselves exist between dialects of the north, centre and south.
Through the centuries of Chinese occupation, the Vietnamese adopted the Han
characters. In the 13th century, they developed their own written variation –
Nom. In the 17th century, missionaries translated the language into its
Romanised form, Quoc Ngu. Thankfully, basic English is usually spoken by some
people in any given destination or venue, but it is a good idea to learn some
basic phrases.
